Willow Basket Making
Mon Sep 8th to Fri Sep 11th 2020

July 2021 - dates to follow

Learn to weave a traditional Welsh framed basket - the Cyntell

This course is designed to teach all the skills needed to weave a traditional framed basket, the Cyntell, and is suitable for all levels, even if you have never woven with willow before.  Willow weaving is a relaxing and enjoyable craft and the process of turning a pile of willow sticks into beautiful and useful objects is very rewarding.
The Cyntell, the Carmarthenshire name for the basket, is woven around a thick willow or hazel hoop and incorporates split and shaved willow ribs. It was used around farms for carrying animal feed and gathering crops and is often used today for laundry, blanket storage or as a log basket.

traditionally Made Willow basket "Welsh Cyntrell"
Justine Burgess from West Wales Willows will be your tutor and will provide a range of Carmarthenshire-grown willow in a variety of natural colours for you to complete your basket.
What you will learn:
Selecting the correct willow for hoop, ribs and weaving
How to form and dry the 18" hoop (If time allows, a mini cyntell of 10" diameter can also be completed)
How to split and shave the willow ribs - NB this will involve using a draw knife and shave horse, which will be provided
How to lash on the ribs
How to weave the body of the basket
